Hey there! I am so excited to share this with you today. After teaching for 20 years, seeing life-changing results never gets boring. There is honestly nothing like that "aha!" moment when a woman or a child realizes just how powerful they really are. ✨️
I love empowering people. It is my absolute passion! But through my years of experience, I’ve noticed that even the most confident people can fall into some common traps when it comes to personal safety. We often think that "safety" means being afraid, but it’s actually the opposite. True safety comes from empowerment and preparation.
If you’ve been looking for self defence instruction for women in West Yorkshire, you’re in the right place. I’ve seen it all, and today I want to break down the 7 biggest mistakes I see people making, and how we can fix them together. Nothing is impossible when you have the right tools! ❤️
1. Ignoring Your "Gut" Feeling
We’ve all been there. That little tingle in your spine or that feeling in your stomach that says, "Something isn't right." One of the biggest mistakes I see is people (especially women) talk themselves out of that feeling because they don’t want to seem "rude" or "paranoid."
Your intuition is your oldest and most reliable safety tool. It’s your inner World Champion West yorkshire spirit trying to protect you! In my workshops, we talk a lot about finding strength through martial arts and learning to trust that internal voice. If it feels wrong, it is wrong for you at that moment. Trust yourself!
2. The "Phone Zone" Distraction

I see this every single day in West Yorkshire. We’re all busy, I get it! But walking with your head down, scrolling through emails or TikTok, is a massive safety mistake. When you’re in the "Phone Zone," you lose your situational awareness.
Being aware of your surroundings doesn't mean being scared; it means being present. I always tell my students that a confident posture and an alert gaze are your first lines of defence. If you look like you know where you’re going and you’re paying attention, you’re much less likely to be targeted. Empowering women through martial arts starts with how you carry yourself in the world.
3. Prioritising Politeness Over Safety
This is a big one. We are often conditioned to be "nice" and "helpful," even to strangers who make us uncomfortable. If someone asks for directions or needs help, and your gut says "no," you have every right to keep walking.
You do not owe anyone your time or your space if it makes you feel unsafe. Learning to say a firm "No" is a core part of the self defence instruction for women in West Yorkshire that I provide. It’s about setting boundaries. We even teach this to kids in our school confidence sessions. It is okay to be "un-polite" if it means staying safe!
4. Thinking Physical Strength is Everything

A lot of women tell me, "I can’t do self-defence, I’m not strong enough." Stop right there! That is a total myth. As a Martial Arts coach West yorkshire, I can tell you that effective self-defence is about technique, leverage, and mindset: not just muscle.
The Dancing Fighter approach is unique because we combine the grace of dance with the power of martial arts. You don't need to be a bodybuilder to be effective. You just need to know how to use your body correctly. We focus on practical tools that help you thrive, no matter your size or strength. Check out our kickboxing confidence courses to see what I mean!
5. Relying Solely on "Gadgets"
Pepper sprays, alarms, and apps are great secondary tools, but they shouldn't be your only plan. What happens if your phone battery dies? What if your alarm is at the bottom of your bag?
The best tool you have is you. Your voice, your eyes, and your movement. When you train with a professional Martial Arts coach West yorkshire, you are building a skill set that you carry with you everywhere. You are the weapon. Your training is the insurance. Relying on yourself is the most empowering thing you can do!
6. The "It Won't Happen to Me" Mindset
We all want to believe we live in a bubble, but being prepared isn't about being negative: it's about being smart. I’ve spent years empowering kids and building their confidence because I know that resilience is a muscle you have to build before you need it.
Staying resilient through hard times is much easier when you’ve already done the work to build your confidence. Don’t wait for a "scare" to start thinking about your safety. Start now! It’s fun, it’s energising, and it will change the way you walk through the world.
7. Training in Isolation (or Not at All!)

You can watch all the YouTube videos in the world, but nothing beats live, hands-on training with a community. When you train with others, you build a support network. You get to practice with different people, hear different perspectives, and most importantly, feel the energy of a room full of people who want to be stronger.
I love my community here in West Yorkshire. Whether I’m working as a World Champion West yorkshire speaker or leading a local workshop, the connection we build is what makes the transformation stick. I love teaching martial arts and dance to children and women because we create positive change together. Don't do it alone!
