After teaching for more than 20 years, seeing life-changing results never gets boring.
Every week, I watch women and children walk into a session feeling nervous, quiet or unsure. Then something changes.
They find their rhythm.
They stand a little taller.
They discover that they are stronger than they thought.
That is why I love empowering people through dance, martial arts and self-defence. These activities are not just about learning steps, kicks or combinations. They are about building resilience, confidence and belief.
They are about learning to say, “I can do this.”
Nothing is impossible! ✨️
Why dance and self-defence work so well together
Dance and self-defence may seem like completely different activities. One is often associated with music, creativity and performance. The other is linked with focus, awareness and personal safety.
But they have more in common than many people realise.
Both require you to use your whole body. Both teach discipline. Both help you become more aware of how you move and how you take up space.
Dance encourages expression. It helps people feel comfortable being seen. It develops coordination, balance and rhythm. It also creates joy.
Self-defence teaches boundaries. It develops awareness, assertiveness and practical physical skills. It helps people understand that their voice matters and that they have the right to feel safe.
Put the two together and you create something powerful.
You build the body.
You strengthen the mind.
You grow confidence from the inside out.

Building confidence one small step at a time
Confidence does not appear overnight.
It grows through small achievements.
The first time a child joins in with a group. The first time a young person performs a movement without hesitation. The first time a woman learns a technique and realises she can use it effectively.
These moments matter.
At Kane Academy in Huddersfield, I have seen children develop confidence through structured martial arts and kickboxing programmes. Our younger students learn through fun, themed activities. They practise listening, focus and teamwork. They learn that mistakes are part of progress.
That lesson is important.
You do not have to get everything right the first time. You only have to keep going.
Our children’s programmes, including Tiny Tigers and Ninja Kids, are designed to help young people grow in a safe and supportive environment. They learn physical skills, but they also learn respect, patience and perseverance.
These skills can support them at school, at home and in friendships.
The same is true for teenagers and adults. Progress in training can create a positive ripple effect in every area of life.
A stronger stance can lead to a stronger voice.
A stronger voice can lead to healthier boundaries.
Healthier boundaries can lead to a more confident future.
Self-defence for women in West Yorkshire
I believe every woman deserves to feel confident in her body and capable of making decisions under pressure.
That does not mean living in fear. It means feeling prepared, aware and empowered.
Our self defence instruction for women in West Yorkshire focuses on practical skills that can be understood and used by people of different ages, abilities and experience levels.
We explore awareness. We discuss body language. We practise clear communication and boundary-setting. We learn physical techniques in a way that feels accessible rather than intimidating.
The aim is not to make women feel they have to become someone else.
The aim is to help them reconnect with their own strength.
When someone learns to stand with confidence, make eye contact and use their voice clearly, the change can be remarkable. Physical training supports emotional strength. It helps people trust themselves.
Women’s kickboxing is another fantastic way to build this confidence. It provides a positive challenge. You work towards goals. You develop fitness. You release stress. You become part of a supportive community.
You do not need to be fit before you start.
You do not need previous martial arts experience.
You simply need to take the first step.
Learning from experience
My own journey has taken me through dance studios, martial arts academies and competitive arenas around the world.
I started Irish dancing at the age of five. Over the years, I competed at open championship level and went on to win British, All Ireland and World Irish Dance titles.
In martial arts, I became a black belt in freestyle karate and kickboxing. I have won world, European and British titles in Filipino martial arts, as well as titles and medals in kickboxing, Muay Thai, K1 and combat sports.
I have also created my own fusion of Filipino martial arts and Irish dance. It combines intricate footwork with martial arts movement. It is creative, challenging and completely unique.
Those experiences taught me a lot.
Winning is exciting, but resilience is built in the difficult moments. It is built when training is hard. It is built when confidence disappears. It is built when you have to start again.
That is why I understand the importance of having an encouraging instructor beside you.
If you are looking for a Martial Arts coach West Yorkshire communities can trust, my role is not simply to teach techniques. I help people believe that progress is possible.
As a World Champion West Yorkshire families and communities have supported, I know how powerful encouragement can be. I also know that you do not have to be a champion athlete to benefit from martial arts.
You only have to be willing to learn.
Supporting schools, families and communities
Empowerment should be available to everyone.
It should not be limited to elite athletes or people who already feel confident. It belongs in schools, community centres, charities, workplaces and local groups.
That is why I deliver workshops for schools and community organisations across Huddersfield, Kirklees, Bradford and Leeds.
A session might include martial arts-based activities, dance, self-defence, confidence-building exercises or team challenges. The format can be adapted to suit the group.
For children, movement can help develop focus, emotional regulation and communication. For women, self-defence and kickboxing can provide practical tools, connection and a sense of personal power.
For organisations, these sessions can help teams improve communication, reduce stress and develop mutual respect.
You can explore my courses and workshops for schools, groups and organisations to see how we can create an experience that meets your needs.
I also work with New Direction Services, delivering sessions across West Yorkshire. These have included women’s self-defence, women’s kickboxing, dance sessions, Ceili sessions, seated sessions and children’s holiday clubs.

I love this kind of community work because it reaches people where they are.
Not everyone feels comfortable walking into a traditional gym. Not everyone wants a competitive environment. Some people need a gentle introduction. Others want a new challenge.
There is room for everyone.
Our community work programme is about helping people take a new direction in life. It is about creating positive experiences and making sure people feel welcomed, respected and supported.
Resilience grows through connection
One of the most beautiful parts of dance and martial arts is the community they create.
You practise together. You encourage one another. You celebrate progress. You learn that someone else’s success does not take away from your own.
This is especially important for children and young people. Positive group activities can help them feel connected and valued. They learn how to cooperate, handle challenges and keep trying when something feels difficult.
It is equally important for women.
A supportive women’s class can become a place to breathe, move, laugh and grow. It can be a space where you can work on your strength without judgement.
Resilience is not about pretending everything is easy.
Resilience is knowing that hard days happen and believing you can move through them.
Dance helps us move.
Self-defence helps us respond.
Community helps us keep going.
Find your inner champion
I recently shared more about this in Finding Your Inner Champion: How Dance and Self-Defense Build Unshakeable Confidence in West Yorkshire.
For me, finding your inner champion is not about being perfect. It is about discovering the voice inside you that says, “I am capable.”
That voice may start quietly.
With encouragement, it becomes stronger.
Then stronger again.
I have seen shy children become joyful performers. I have seen women who doubted themselves become confident leaders. I have seen groups arrive as strangers and leave feeling like a team.
After more than 20 years of teaching, those moments still inspire me.
Nothing is impossible when we create the right environment.
Nothing is impossible when people are given practical tools and genuine encouragement.
Nothing is impossible when we believe in each other.
Your journey can start today
You do not have to wait until you feel confident.
Start where you are.
Take one class. Ask one question. Try one new movement. Bring your group along for a workshop. Give yourself permission to learn.
Whether you are a woman looking for self-defence training, a parent searching for confidence-building activities for your child, or an organisation supporting people across West Yorkshire, I would love to hear from you.
I love empowering people. I love seeing confidence grow. I love watching people discover that they can do far more than they imagined.
Subscribe to my newsletter to keep in the loop with some of the amazing work happening through The Dancing Fighter, Kane Academy and our community programmes.
Let’s keep moving, learning and growing together.
Your inner champion is already there.
It is time to let them shine. ❤️
