After teaching for more than 20 years, seeing life-changing results never gets boring.
Every week, I watch women and children discover strength they did not know they had. I see shy children find their voice. I see women stand taller. I see groups become more connected.
That is why I love what I do.
Dance and self-defence might seem like two very different worlds. One is expressive and creative. The other is practical and focused.
But together, they are powerful.
They help people build resilience, empowerment and confidence. They help people feel comfortable in their own skin. Most importantly, they remind us that nothing is impossible!
Why movement can change how we feel
When we move, something shifts.
A child who feels nervous may begin to smile. A woman who feels uncertain may start to take up space. A team that feels disconnected may begin to work together.
Dance teaches rhythm, coordination and self-expression. It encourages us to be seen. It helps us celebrate progress, not perfection.
Self-defence teaches awareness, boundaries and decision-making. It helps us understand how to respond under pressure. It builds calm, not fear.
I bring these ideas together in my workshops across Huddersfield, Kirklees, Bradford, Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire area.
The aim is never to create fear. It is to create confidence.
Self defence instruction for women in West Yorkshire
Every woman deserves to feel safer and more confident in everyday life.
That is the heart of my self defence instruction for women in West Yorkshire.
My sessions are practical, friendly and accessible. They can be delivered for ladies-only groups, charities, schools, community organisations, companies and people with learning difficulties or disabilities.
We explore:
- Personal awareness.
- Confident body language.
- Verbal boundaries.
- De-escalation.
- Simple, effective self-defence techniques.
- How to respond to challenging situations.
- How to stay calm and make clear decisions.
There is no pressure to be the strongest person in the room. You do not need previous experience. You do not need to be sporty.
You simply need to be willing to learn.
I often see a change within one session. Someone arrives quietly. They listen. They practise. They realise they can do more than they thought.
Then they leave with a different posture and a brighter smile.
That moment is everything.

Learning from experience
My own journey has included many highs and plenty of challenges.
I achieved my black belt in freestyle karate and kickboxing in 1999. From 1999 to 2007, I became a five-time world champion, two-time European champion and ten-time British champion in full-contact Filipino Martial Arts.
I have also competed in Muay Thai, K1 kickboxing, sport boxing and Irish dance. I was inducted into the International Black Belt Hall of Fame in 2010.
Dance has always been part of my life too. I began Irish dancing at the age of five and went on to win British, World and All Ireland titles.
I even created a fusion of Filipino Martial Arts and Irish dance. It combines intricate footwork, rhythm and weapon-based movement.
My experiences have taught me one important lesson:
Confidence is built through action.
You do not wait until you feel confident. You take one small step. Then another. Confidence grows as you practise.
As a Martial Arts coach West Yorkshire families, schools and organisations can trust, I want every person I teach to understand their own potential.
And as a World Champion West Yorkshire has proudly supported, I know what discipline and perseverance can achieve.
But my greatest reward is not a trophy.
It is seeing somebody believe in themselves.
Helping children build confidence early
Children face so many pressures today.
They may struggle with friendships, anxiety, bullying, change or simply feeling different. Giving children positive tools early can make a real difference.
Dance and martial arts help children practise resilience in a safe and supportive environment.
They learn to:
- Listen and concentrate.
- Follow instructions.
- Try again after making a mistake.
- Work as part of a team.
- Express themselves.
- Respect their own boundaries.
- Respect other people’s boundaries.
- Celebrate each other’s progress.
The atmosphere matters enormously.
My workshops are energetic, but they are also encouraging. We laugh. We practise. We make mistakes. We try again.
That is how resilience develops.
A child does not need to get every movement right. They need to learn that getting something wrong is not the end of the story.
It is simply part of learning.

Supporting schools, charities and community groups
The community is at the centre of my work.
I have delivered sessions for schools, charities, companies and community groups across West Yorkshire. These include dance workshops, self-defence courses, kickboxing sessions, seated activities, children’s holiday clubs and team-building programmes.
I also work with groups supporting vulnerable people. Sessions can be adapted to suit different ages, abilities and experiences.
For schools, a workshop might focus on confidence, anti-bullying, teamwork or positive behaviour.
For a charity, it might support wellbeing, independence and personal safety.
For a company, it could be a team-building day that helps colleagues communicate, manage stress and develop mutual respect.
You can find more information about my corporate courses, public speaking, self-defence and dance workshops here.
I also regularly work with New Direction Services across West Yorkshire. This includes women’s self-defence, women’s kickboxing, dance sessions, ceilis, seated sessions and kids’ holiday clubs. You can read more about this work on my community work page.
West Yorkshire already has an inspiring network
I love seeing so many local programmes making a difference.
In Huddersfield and Kirklees, community projects such as New Direction Services help women and young people access confidence-building activities close to home.
There are also specialist personal safety organisations working across the region. Freedom Personal Safety, based in Slaithwaite, supports women and children through safety awareness and self-defence education. Their work is a brilliant example of how local expertise can reach people in community settings.
In Bradford, DUY’s Resi/Dance project uses dance to support children and young people in Holme Wood. Dance companies such as Erupt, Evolve and Excel give young people a place to learn, connect and express themselves.
In Leeds, organisations such as Self Defence Academy UK deliver practical training for women, schools, companies and community groups. Projects such as Springback’s self-defence and recovery sessions also show the importance of accessible support for women and girls.
These programmes all have their own approach. That is a good thing.
There is room for many different styles, instructors and communities.
What matters is that people have opportunities to build confidence in ways that feel safe, positive and relevant to them.
Confidence belongs everywhere
Empowerment should not be limited to elite gyms or private studios.
It belongs in schools.
It belongs in community centres.
It belongs in workplaces, charities and local groups.
It belongs in Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds, Kirklees and every corner of West Yorkshire.
That is why I love bringing dance and martial arts into different environments. The session can be adapted, but the goal remains the same.
Help people feel stronger.
Help people feel heard.
Help people believe they can cope with life’s challenges.

Your next step starts here
You do not have to become a world champion to feel empowered.
You do not have to perform on a stage.
You do not have to know anything about martial arts.
Start where you are.
Take one step. Learn one movement. Speak one boundary. Encourage one child. Support one woman.
Small actions create big changes.
After more than two decades of teaching, I still get excited about every new group I meet. I still love watching people grow. I still believe that confidence can change a life.
Nothing is impossible!
