Happy New Year, beautiful people! ✨ Can you believe we're already in 2026? I'm sitting here with my morning coffee, feeling absolutely buzzing with excitement about what this year holds for all of us at The Dancing Fighter family.
You know, after teaching for 20 years and seeing life-changing results, I never get tired of fresh starts. There's something magical about January – it feels like the whole world is holding its breath, ready to exhale into new possibilities. And honestly? I think this year is going to be our best one yet!
Why Fresh Starts Actually Work
Let me tell you something I've learned from watching thousands of women and children step onto our mats for the first time – fresh starts aren't just calendar dates. They're mindset shifts. When my students walk through our doors, whether it's their first kickboxing class or their fiftieth dance session, they're choosing to begin again. And that choice? That's pure power right there.
Research shows that "fresh start moments" – like New Year's Day, birthdays, or even just Mondays – give us psychological boosts to make positive changes. It's like our brains get a reset button, and suddenly what felt impossible last week feels totally doable today.

Setting Intentions, Not Just Goals
Here's where I want to shake things up a bit. Instead of setting rigid goals that make us feel rubbish when we stumble, let's talk about intentions. Goals say "I must do this perfectly or I've failed." Intentions say "I'm moving in this direction, and every step counts."
In my martial arts classes, I don't expect anyone to nail their first roundhouse kick perfectly. What I care about is the intention behind it – the courage to try, the willingness to look silly, the determination to keep going. That's what transforms people, not perfection.
So instead of "I will train five times a week without fail," try "I intend to move my body regularly because I deserve to feel strong." Feel the difference? One creates pressure, the other creates possibility.
Start Small, Think Big
You know what I absolutely love about teaching children? They don't overthink things. When I show them a new dance move, they just go for it. No self-doubt, no "I'm not coordinated enough" – just pure enthusiasm.
We adults could learn from this. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with massive transformations, let's start with tiny wins that build confidence:
- Dance for 5 minutes in your kitchen while making breakfast
- Practice one self-defense move you learned in class
- Stand in a power pose for 30 seconds before important meetings
- Compliment yourself in the mirror each morning
These might seem small, but I promise you – small actions create big momentum. I've seen shy little girls become confident leaders, and anxious women transform into fearless warriors, all starting with tiny steps.
Build Your Confidence Toolkit
Confidence isn't something you either have or don't have – it's something you build, like muscle memory in martial arts. Here's my tried-and-tested confidence toolkit that I share with all my students:
Morning Power Ritual: Start each day with 2 minutes of movement. Could be stretching, shadow boxing, or dancing to your favorite song. Movement changes everything – it shifts your energy, your posture, your entire day.
Celebration Practice: Write down three wins from each day, no matter how small. Showed up to class? Win! Tried a new technique? Win! Smiled at a stranger? Massive win! Celebrating builds the neural pathways for recognizing your own awesomeness.
Community Connection: Surround yourself with people who lift you up. This is why our Dancing Fighter community is so special – we're all here cheering each other on, celebrating victories together, and picking each other up when we stumble.

The Power of Saying "Yet"
Here's a game-changer I teach all my students: add the word "yet" to any negative self-talk.
"I can't do a proper punch" becomes "I can't do a proper punch yet."
"I'm not flexible enough for this dance move" becomes "I'm not flexible enough for this dance move yet."
"I don't feel confident" becomes "I don't feel confident yet."
This tiny word shift changes everything. It moves you from fixed to growth mindset, from limitation to possibility. Nothing is impossible – you just haven't figured it out yet!
Creating Your Support Squad
One thing the research absolutely nails is this: accountability changes everything. When you have people believing in you, cheering you on, and gently nudging you forward, your chances of success skyrocket.
This is exactly why I love what we do at The Dancing Fighter. We're not just teaching martial arts and dance – we're building a tribe of strong, supportive women and children who lift each other up. When you join our classes, you're not just getting techniques, you're getting a whole squad of people rooting for your success.
If you can't make it to our sessions yet, create your own mini support squad:
- Find an accountability partner for your 2026 intentions
- Join online communities aligned with your goals
- Share your journey with friends and family who celebrate you
- Consider working with a coach or mentor who believes in your potential

Embracing the Wobbles
Let me be real with you for a second. You're going to have wobbly days. Days when motivation disappears, when old doubts creep back in, when everything feels too hard. This isn't failure – this is being human.
In martial arts, we call it "finding your balance." You don't learn balance by never falling – you learn it by falling and getting back up, again and again, until staying upright becomes second nature.
When those wobbly moments come (and they will), remember:
- One difficult day doesn't erase weeks of progress
- Setbacks are setups for comebacks
- Every expert was once a beginner
- Your journey is uniquely yours – no comparison needed
Be gentle with yourself. Speak to yourself like you would to a dear friend. You're doing better than you think you are.
Your 2026 Action Plan
Ready to make this year absolutely incredible? Here's your simple but powerful action plan:
Week 1: Choose one small daily practice that lights you up. Maybe it's 5 minutes of movement, practicing gratitude, or calling someone you love.
Week 2-4: Build consistency with your chosen practice while adding one weekly challenge that pushes your comfort zone slightly.
Monthly Check-ins: Celebrate your wins, adjust what's not working, and set intentions for the coming month.
Quarterly Reviews: Look back at your progress, appreciate how far you've come, and dream about what's next.
Remember, this isn't about perfection – it's about progression. Every step forward counts, every choice to try again matters, every moment of courage adds up.
